I often miss game jams even though everybody says you should do them. I have a bad habit of seeing notices for things late and this was no different. I only heard about this game jam the weekend before it was due, leaving me Friday morning to Sunday night to complete my entry. I completed four screenshots showing slices of gameplay for a JRPG concept called "Bathsyphere".
In Bathysphere, you'd control a party of adventurers in an underwater-based world. The surface is too dangerous due to storms so people live in sheltered ports and underwater bunkers with submarines acting as the main mode of industry, transportation, warfare, etc. Basically filling the role airships traditionally fill in RPGs, but with the extra step of managing and equipping your bathysphere for vehicle-based battles and exploration.
I'd say the overall concept is part Chrono Trigger (aesthetic), Sunken City (some management ideas that feel right for a JRPG), and JRPG mechanics more generally. I had a lot of fun working on this and was asked numerous times if it could become a real game or if I'd make asset packs based on the mockups. The answer to both, for now, is no. I would need a lot of help to make it a game, not to mention $$$. And I am reluctant to make assets based on it because of the undertaking it would be to create complete asset packs in such a specific theme. Definitely appreciated being asked, though! :P
